PAN: God of fertility, shepherds, flocks, nature. Son of MERCURY and a wood nymph. His name means "all". Usually seen as having ears and hoofs of a goat, having a large nose, having a beard and being generally hairy. Liked wandering around by himself, amusing himself in lonely places. Strong, sudden fear is called Panic fear because it usually happened in lonely places (where Pan was). He was followed by SATYRS. Played the Pan-pipes, which he created out of reeds. Pursued SYRINX. Had a music contest with APOLLO, which turned out badly for MIDAS. PHAETHON: Son of APOLLO. When faced with his son for the first time, he granted him one wish. Phaethon asked to drive the sun chariot for one day. This was disastrous: the horses jumped all over the place, and they came too close to Africa, burning it. Eventually, ZEUS killed Phaethon with a thunderbolt. Apollo didn't bring the sun out for a while in grief, and Phaethon's sisters were so sad that they turned into poplars. PHOSPHOR: The Morning star. Son of AURORA and Cephalus. PLUTO, HADES, DIS: God of the UNDERWORLD. Son of: CRONUS and RHEA. Husband of PERSEPHONE. Was upset when given the Underworld to rule, but ZEUS convinced him this was not a bad thing. He wanted a wife, and Zeus promised him Persephone. Tired of waiting, Pluto took Persephone to the underworld. She lives with him for six months of the year. His companion is CERBERUS. POSEIDON (Greek) - NEPTUNE (Roman): God the oceans, earthquakes, and horses. Son of: CRONUS and RHEA Husband of Amphitrite, Father of TRITON. Attended by PROTEUS. Had a contest with ATHENA. Helped MARPESSA. PROMETHEUS: Brother of: EPIMETHEUS Father of: DEUCALION Titan; first man, his name means "forethought". Refused to take arms against ZEUS, and was his adviser for a while. Zeus got rid of the men of the silver age, so Prometheus made new men out of clay. He felt sorry for the new people, so he gave them the gift of fire. Zeus was upset, so he sent PANDORA and her box. Zeus still wasn't satisfied, so he tied Prometheus to a rock, and made a bird eat out his liver every day, while it grew back at night. PROTEUS: Could change his shape at will, and also had the gift of prophesy. You could catch him when he was sleeping, but you have to hold on tightly while he tries to wriggle loose by changing his form. If you could hold on long enough, he would tell you whatever you wanted to know. Attended on NEPTUNE. PYGMALION and GALATEA: Pygmalion created a statue called Galatea and fell in love with it. He asked VENUS to make the statue real, and she did. They married, and had a son called Paphus. SILVANUS (Roman): God of fields and forests. His name means "woods". Associated with PAN. Sacrifices of grain, corn, pigs, wine and grapes were made to him. SISYPHUYS: King of Corinth. In the underworld, was condemned to push a big marble block uphill. When it gets there, it slides back down and he does it again. TANTALUS: A king, and father of NIOBE. He was favoured by the gods, but was just generally a bad human being. He killed his own son. After death, he was condemned to stand in water that just touched his chin. Constantly thirsty, whenever he tries to drink from the water, it moves away. He also has fruit hanging above his head. Constantly hungry, whenever he tries to eat the fruit, it moves away. TERMINUS (Roman): God of boundaries. Had a festival on Feb. 21st, and people who lived beside each other met at their Terminus stones and put up altars, and offered grain, honey, and wine. In the temple of Terminus, the roof above the altar was open, because he could only be worshipped in the open air. THANATOS: Death. Brother of HYPNOS. Seen as young, quiet man with wings. Sometimes stands beside funeral urn or coffin. Sometimes holds a blown-out torch. THOR (Norse): The God of War. The Strongest being of all. Had a wagon drawn by two dragons. He had the hammer Mjollnir, the Girdle of strength, and the Iron mittens. Did battle with the frost giants, and was friendly to humans. He was hot-tempered, honest, and didn't talk much. Thursday is named after him. Once he lost his hammer to the frost giants. The king wanted FREYA as a bride in return for it. LOKI convinced Thor to dress up in woman's clothing and say he was Freya. He did, and got the hammer back and killed the king and his attendants. TITHONUS: Husband of AURORA. Son of the king of Troy. Aurora wanted him to stay with her forever, so she asked for his eternal life. She forgot to ask for eternal youth, however, and so he kept getting older and older until she locked him in a room. Eventually, she changed him into a grasshopper. TIU, TYR (Norse): A War God. Courageous, and men called his name in the midst of battle. Tuesday is named after him. TRITON: Son of NEPTUNE URANUS (Greek and Roman?): Emerged from Chaos, husband of GAEA. Father of CRONUS, MNEMOSYNE, The Furies and the Titans. Some of his children were beautiful, others monsters. He hated all of his children, but confined the monsters to Tartarus. When attacked by Cronus, Giants and the Furies came from his blood. YMIR (Norse): Giant who came from the clouds at the beginning of creation. Fed by AUDHUMLA. He was killed by the sons of BOR, and they made the world out of his body. The Earth, made of his bones, hair and body, was called Midgard. The sky, made of his skull, was stretched over it and fastened down. At the four corners, a dwarf sat. ZEUS (Greek) - JUPITER, JOVE (Roman): King of the Gods Son of CRONUS and RHEA, husband of HERA. Father of MARS, VULCAN, HEBE, the Minotaur, HERMES, ARTEMIS, THE MUSES Symbols: Eagle, Oak, Lightning. Raised on the island of Crete, he made war on Cronus and forced his father to disgorge his siblings. The younger Gods made war on the older ones, and won.
